Reading is a skill which has high emphasis at Grange. It is one of the first building blocks in the journey to our pupils going on to be successful, independent learners.

Pupils begin by learning the initial alphabet sounds and names, moving on to learning the other phonic sounds and their grapheme representations made in the English language. Our children begin to learn and recognise sounds from nursery upwards, through the teaching of actions and sound repetition, identifying sounds verbally or in text and showing recall by saying or writing the sounds through phonic games and activities. Children then move on to blending the sounds they have learnt in order to decode more and more difficult words as they progress through Key Stage 1 to Key Stage 2 developing fluency and eloquence in their reading.

At the same time, children develop their understanding of the written word through vocabulary and grammar investigations to check their understanding of the words and phrases in the text. Through questioning and discussion of events in the plot, or actions of the characters in the story, pupils develop empathy, understanding and are able to infer meaning through the recognised clues in the text. Pupils develop skills such as skimming and scanning to retrieve information quickly in order to explain or answer questions.

Teachers and pupils share their passion for books through class reading and World Book Day is eagerly celebrated annually across the school. Our amazing new library is the highly regarded focal point of our school and a treasured space for children to indulge their love of books.

By the end of Year 6, many of our children have an embedded love of reading and recognise themselves as independent readers who can freely access whatever books their inquisitive heart desires!

At Grange we carefully match children's reading ability with a fun and exciting book. This book will be taken home daily. to allow opportunities for the book to be read with a parent, carer, other family member or by the child themself. Each time your child reads at home, please make a note in their reading diary. This will be reguarly checked in class and for every read at home your child will receive a tick on their reading reward record. By getting enough tickes, the children will earn certificates which are handed out in assembly. Each certificate depicts a different precious stone. 

Why it is important to read at home with your child?

Reading with your child has astonishing benefits for children: comfort and reassurance, confidence and security, relaxation, happiness and fun. Giving a child time and full attention when reading them a story tells them they matter. It builds self-esteem, vocabulary, feeds imagination and even improves their sleeping patterns.

Reading for pleasure

At Grange, we recognise the vital part that reading has on children's ability to make sense of the world around them and to access other areas of learning. We strongly beleive that our children must have a love for reading in order for them to progress as readers and develop good reading habits that will last a life-time. We have teramed up with the Lincolnshitre Reading Hub and signed up the Licolnshire Reading Pledge. We have taken steps to make reading an even more enjoyable and integral part of daily life at Grange. Our stunning new library, provides children with an inspirational space to read and discuss books with friends. We have invested heavily in new and exciting books from the latest authors and have invited authors to visit our school.

Rewarding Reading

At Grange we believe that the reward from reading is the pleasure itself but we also understand that our children sometimes need an incentive to encourage them to read as much as possible at home. We have created an exciting reward chart, where the children earn a point for every time they read at home. The points will conver into differemt reading certificates as the year goes on based around precious gems.
