What is Pupil Premium?

The Government has given additional funding to schools and academies for Pupil Premium children, the number of pupils eligible for Free School Meals.  Once a child has become eligible for Pupil Premium funding, this continues for six years after even if circumstances change and you are no longer eligible the funding will continue for the following six years.  

The additional funding is given to raise the attainment of Pupil Premium of all abilities and to close the gaps in their learning between them and their peers. 

Pupil Premium grant 

In the financial year 2023-2024, schools received £1,455 for each pupil registered as eligible for free school meals (FSM).  

Schools are free to spend the Pupil Premium as they see fit. However, we will be held accountable for how we have used the additional funding to support pupils from low- income families to narrow the gap in attainment between them and their peers. From September 2012, we are required to publish online information about how we used the Premium. This will ensure that parents and others are made fully aware of the attainment of pupils covered by the Premium and extra support that they receive.

In addition, school also receives £2,530 for each pupil who is classed as a child looked after.

Statement of intent

Our intention here at Grange Primary School is that all pupils, irrespective of their background or the challenges they face, make at least good progress and achieve age related expectations in attainment across all subject areas. The focus of our pupil premium strategy is to support disadvantaged pupils to achieve that goal, including progress for those who are already high attainers.

We will consider the challenges faced by vulnerable pupils, such as those who have a social worker and are young carers. The activity we have outlined in this statement is also intended to support their needs, regardless of whether they are disadvantaged or not.

High-quality teaching is at the heart of our approach, with a focus on areas in which disadvantaged pupils require the most support. This is proven to have the greatest impact on closing the disadvantage attainment gap and at the same time will benefit the non-disadvantaged pupils in our school. Implicit in the intended outcomes detailed below, is the intention that non-disadvantaged pupils’ attainment will be sustained and improved alongside progress for their disadvantaged peers.

Our strategy is also fundamental to wider school plans for education recovery, notably in its targeted support through the National Tutoring Programme for pupils whose education has been worst affected, including non-disadvantaged pupils.   

Our approach will be responsive to common challenges and individual needs, rooted in robust diagnostic assessment, not assumptions about the impact of disadvantage. The approaches we have adopted complement each other to help pupils excel. To ensure they are effective we will:

• ensure disadvantaged pupils are challenged in the work that they’re set
• act early to intervene at the point need is identified
• adopt a whole school approach in which all staff take responsibility for disadvantaged pupils’ outcomes and raise expectations of what they can achieve

The progress of children receiving Pupil Premium funding will be closely monitored by the Senior Leadership Team in order to ensure that the additional support is having significant impact on the education and well –being of individuals. Information will be regularly shared, reviewed and evaluated with the Governing Body.

How Can You Access the Pupil Premium Funding at Grange Primary School?

You can claim free school meals for your child if your child is in full-time education, you are responsible for your child, and you get at least one of the following benefits:

• Income support
• Income based job seekers allowance
• Income related employment and support allowance
• Guaranteed pension credit
• Child tax credit with an annual income each year of less than £16,190 (as assessed by tax credits)
• Support under part VI of the Immigration and Asylum Act 1999
• Universal credit

If you receive child tax credit and working tax credit, your child will not qualify for free school meals.

IMPORTANT: Even if your child receives Universal Free School Meal (Reception, Year 1 and Year 2) it is still important to apply for it, because Grange Primary School will receive additional funding for every eligible pupil.
